Author Interview: Theresa Papa
What is your favorite genre to read? Would you ever write in a genre other than romance?
My favorite genre to read is Romance with strong female characters. It’s why I write love stories into every book even though I try to add action, adventure, and suspense too. Someday, I’d like to write a mystery thriller, but it would still revolve around dating and relationships.
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Since moving from Illinois to Arizona, my lifestyle is much more conducive to reading and writing. I enjoy spending time with my husband and our two daughters and with extended family here too. We all are together regularly cooking and enjoying Italian food while passing traditions onto the next generations.
It was important to me to start with a trilogy and release them two weeks apart. As an avid reader myself, I love to binge read series. So, I have self-published three books in the Romance/ Suspense genre that takes place in the urban setting of Chicago for my readers to do the same. Our oldest daughter’s book club read A Brush with Obsession and had me do a signing for them. It was so much fun to see a group of twenty-nine-year-olds discussing my novel.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The latest book I published is Reckless Obsession Book #3 of the trilogy. The main character, Jaxson Pope, was inspired by the fact that I wanted him to be the opposite of his brother. I wanted him to experience angst in his decisions about right and wrong. He needed to come to terms with his past and deal with the guilt that plagued his relationships. The story depicts forgiveness of oneself and your partner to culminate the widely pursued happily ever after.
Which character did you enjoy writing about the most in that book?
Amanda Harrington was a fun character to write. Mental Illness is never to be taken lightly and is a serious subject. Her psychological problems were interesting to research and she was fictionally compelling to create. Some of the unorthodox things I made her do in Reckless Obsession surprised even me.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really, I have a Yorkshire Terrier named Pico that makes me pay attention to him regularly.
What authors or books have influenced you?
The author that taught me the most has been Alessandra Torre. I took her classes and she helped me figure out many of the unknowns. The first series I loved that motivated me to try writing was by Kimball Lee. The Legal Legacy series. I mostly read books on Kindle Unlimited and offer all my books there as well.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on a spin-off trilogy involving a wealthy family introduced in The Pope Family Trilogy. The Dragonetti Family. Their father unwittingly gets involved with the Chicago mafia when he’s asked a favor from a friend. It twists and turns throughout the three books as they get tied up tighter and tighter into the knot that may never untangle.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with, which books would you bring?
That’s like trying to choose your favorite children, very difficult. I would pick the longest, so they would last.
